Repair Graving Dock and Caisson, Naval Base San Diego, San Diego, CA
This project involved the recertification of the graving dock caisson which required a complete overhaul by a local ship repair facility. The overhaul included the cleaning, inspection, ultrasonic testing, and the structural repair of the caisson, including interior framing members and outside skin. Additionally, ballast pump check valves were replaced, and the caisson was sandblasted and repainted at the ARCO submarine floating drydock at NBPL. All work was done under the supervision of SWRMC. At the Graving Dock, both 54” discharge pumps were restored by sandblasting and removal of existing lead paint with structural repairs made to the pump housings. Ultrasonic testing was performed and the pumps were repaired/reconstructed with epoxy. Concrete restoration was performed in various locations within the existing graving dock. Miscellaneous electrical and mechanical work were also performed, and many of the existing valves were replaced in the pump room.
