With the official closure of Hamilton Airfield in 1974, federal, state and local agencies identified it as a place where wetlands could be restored utilizing clean dredged materials. This 640-acre salt marsh Wetland Restoration Project included final shaping of the South Season Wetlands and Tidal Panne area, deconstruction of temporary earthen structures, and building demolition. The contract also included construction of a paved Bay Trail along the site, as well as lowering of the bay front levee and removal of remaining access infrastructure and breach of the site to tidal action. Additionally, Marathon Construction provided excavation of the pilot and access channel to the San Francisco bay. This is the largest wetlands restoration project of its type ever attempted on the West Coast.
